Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio
The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Return
One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He joined in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Discovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to identify the nature of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
